Tips For Being A Great Babysitter
| A Fun Video On Water Safety |
| This public service announcement was provided by the Golder Ranch Fire District |
Jobs for teenagers can be hard to come by, especially with the current economy.
While many teens head to the mall or burger joint in search of employment,
the perfect job could be right next door. Here are some tips on becoming
the babysitter your neighbors will love.
Many local agencies, such as City of Tucson Parks and Recreation and the Northwest Fire District offer babysitting classes. You can learn skills like CPR, first aid, even how to change a diaper. These skills will put you far above potential babysitter running mates.
Next, give possible employers a free sample. Offer homework help or bake cookies with your neighbor’s kiddos while Mom and Dad clean the garage. After seeing how great you are with the kids, it is only a matter of time until they call you. (Just don’t do this more than once or twice; while there is definitely something to be said for volunteering, you are looking to make some cash, right?)
When you have finally landed a babysitting gig, make the experience great for everyone involved. That means the parents, the kids, and you! This way the parents will become repeat customers and refer you to others, the kids will love you and be on their best behavior, and you will enjoy your job.
To make it a positive occasion for all, begin by setting ground rules. Make it fun by asking the kids for ideas on rules and consequences and writing them on a big piece of paper taped to the wall or fridge. This works especially well if there are several children, as they will relish the thought of their sibling getting busted. Follow through with any consequences from the get-go so the kids know you mean business and respect you.
Plan fun activities each time you babysit. Find a new game online to play with the kids, organize a kickball game in the backyard, or spend hours doing hairstyles with your female charges.
Do your best to keep the home tidy, although depending on the kids this might be tough! Don’t spend the time on the phone or internet. Spend time getting to know the kids, and be thankful for finding such an awesome job.
